User Experience Designer

Food.com

  • Role: Information architecture
  • Interaction design

Food.com is a community site with one of the largest collection of recipes on the Internet. The redesign focused on implementing a design system across the site, improved search experience, and optimization for SEO. A small team worked to define the new information architecture, while I was primarily responsible for the interaction design for the homepage, search, and category pages.

The finished Food.com homepage is intended to balance both the needs of the members while also highlighting valuable search terms.

Search engine optimization is important, but it can't be forgotten who really uses your product.
A tough decision to make regarding search results is which information to highlight. For Food.com, we chose to show the recipe name, it’s rating, and the description from the original poster. Since analytics showed that users rarely used additional filters, we chose to make the design cleaner and give users the options to show them when needed. This decision did not affect the amount of usage of the filters.
